Binged Yearenders: Jio Cinema Annual Report 2023

We all know that Jio Cinema has been aggressively reinventing its content portfolio: right from streaming the massively popular IPL 2023 cricket tournament for free to acquiring premium HBO titles like ‘Succession’ and ‘House of the Dragon’, and later Peacock and Paramount+ global content, etc. Now, let’s see how many of the titles which streamed during the year 2023 resonated with the Indian OTT audience.

We have compiled a list of the popular (mostly Indian) titles which were released on Jio Cinema in 2023 along with their ‘Hit’, ‘Semi-Hit’, ‘Miss’ or ‘Super-Hit’ status. ‘Hit’ implies good title acquisition (based on popularity and/or critical reception), ‘Miss’ signifies a not-so-good title acquisition, ‘Semi-Hit’ signifies a not-too-bad / not-too-good title acquisition, and ‘Super-Hit’ implies a highly successful title acquisition by Jio Cinema (one bonus ‘Hit’ point given for ‘Super-Hit’ titles with total no. of titles remaining as per actual and half hit point given to ‘Semi-Hit’ titles).

Analysis-:
Jio Cinema is undoubtedly a formidable player in the Indian streaming space courtesy considering its ambitious plans and deep pockets. However, the OTT giant arrived in a big way around the middle of the year 2023 when it partnered with WBD and brought HBO & Max content to its platform followed by Voot content migration to Jio Cinema. That’s when it started airing buzzy shows like ‘Asur Season-2’ besides premium foreign titles.

As you can see above, we have divided Jio Cinema’s content portfolio into different categories namely Web Series, Licensed Films, Direct-to-OTT films, Sports, and Reality Shows.

As far as Jio Cinema’s ‘Web Series’ portfolio is concerned, it was an interesting mix of hits, misses, and semi-hit titles. The major standouts of 2023 were Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti starrer mythological thriller series ‘Asur Season-2’, cop drama ‘Kaalkoot’ featuring the immensely talented Vijay Verma, and Sushmita Sen’s ‘Taali’.

On the ‘Licensed Films’ front, Jio Cinema acquired several titles and out of them, some of the movies which became quite popular were Varun Dhawan’s werewolf film ‘Bhediya’, ‘Vikram Vedha’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, and Laxman Utekaar’s rom-com ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’.

Moreover, there were also a few ‘Direct-To-OTT’ films which generated decent buzz for Jio Cinema in the year 2023. For instance, Shahid Kapoor’s slick actioner ‘Bloody Daddy’ and the sports drama ‘Kacchey Limbu’ got a good response by streaming viewers.

Moving on to the ‘Sports’ portfolio, IPL 2023, the India Vs Australia ODI Series, and the India Vs Australia T20 Series turned out to attract massive viewership during the year and these events were huge hits for Jio Cinema.

Finally, the ‘Reality Series’ portfolio, albeit comprising just three main titles, was dominated big time by the seventeenth season of the Salman Khan hosted reality series ‘Bigg Boss’. It’s an ongoing show which is gaining significant traction each day, especially on the weekends.

Jio Cinema’s ‘Web Series’ Portfolio Success Score = 66% = 66/100
Jio Cinema’s ‘Licensed Films’ Portfolio Success Score = 53% = 53/100
Jio Cinema’s ‘Direct-To-OTT Films’ Portfolio Success Score = 50% = 50/100
Jio Cinema’s ‘Sports’ Portfolio Success Score = 140% = 140/100
Jio Cinema’s ‘Reality Shows’ Portfolio Success Score = 133% = 133/100

Overall, there were fifteen ‘Hits’, fourteen ‘Semi-Hits’, sixteen ‘Misses’, and seven ‘Super-Hit’ titles for Jio Cinema for the year 2023 across all categories.

Jio Cinema 2023 Overall Success Score = 70% = 70/100
