2023 has come to an end and we can say that this year has been one of the finest years for all cinephiles. With the massive box-office clash of Barbenheimer to masters like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott coming back with new movies. The Indian film industries too saw a huge success in theatrical releases as well as the OTT domain. Shahrukh Khan has had two blockbusters and is about to release another anticipated movie. From the South Indian industries we got ‘Leo’, ‘Jailer’, ‘2018’ and many others.
The Kannada movie industry, however, went through a crisis and did not perform as good as the other southern industries. The much anticipated movie ‘Kabzaa’ was a huge disaster at the box office. It was made with a rather massive budget. Neither did we observe some unique movie this year that we can tag as a piece of art. There were no exceptional movies like ‘Kantara’ or ‘Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana’. Rakshit Shetty once more acts as savior for Sandalwood with two parts of the film ‘Sapta Saagaradaache Ello’. Both ‘Sapta Saagaradaache Ello-Side A’ and ‘Sapta Saagaradaache Ello-Side B’ were appreciated by critics and audiences.
Here is a short analysis of the performances of top production houses in Sandalwood in 2023.
Media House Studios: Media House Studios is one of the biggest production houses in the Kannada film industry now. And with only one movie, the action thriller ‘Kranti’, it has enjoyed huge success. However, ‘Kranti’ was not a critical hit and it is seen by some as a failed attempt to try the pan-India format with a very predictable storyline.
Sandesh Productions: With the release of Shiva Rajkumar’s ‘Ghost’ Sandesh Productions had a pretty successful year. They also created another cinematic universe with the movie, and it will be followed by some spin-offs too. ‘Sandesh’ produced only one film this year and it grossed over 24 crores at the box office.
Paramvah Studios: Rakshit Shetty’s wonderful romance in two parts, ‘Sapta Saagaradaache Ello-Side A’ and ‘Sapta Saagaradaache Ello-Side B’ were superhit at the box office and they impressed the audiences and critics as well. The production house also distributed the movie ‘Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare’.
Gulmohur Films & Varrun Studios: ‘Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare’ was a decent comedy from Gulmohar Films. It grossed around 25 crores at the box office, which is pretty good for a regional movie with a low budget.
KRG Studios: KRG Studios has produced multiple films this year. KRG’s ‘Gurudev Hoysala’ was a decent hit and a critically acclaimed film. The house also distributed some big titles like ‘Baana Dariyalli’, ‘Tatsama Tadbhava’, ‘Kshetrapati’, ‘Adipurush’ in Kannada, ‘Shivaji Surathkal 2’, ‘Aachar & Co’ etc.
