In the year 2022, streaming audiences have witnessed an interesting blend of Indian movies which skipped theatrical release and were released directly on various OTT platforms. And there were also some films which perhaps didn’t get the love, appreciation, and popularity they deserved. Paka aka River of Blood (Streaming on SonyLIV)
Set in North Kerala and helmed by sound designer turned filmmaker Nithin Lukose, it’s the story of two star-crossed lovers namely Johnny (Basil Paulose) and Anna (Vinitha Koshy) amidst the bloody backdrop of a long-standing, fierce rivalry between their families. Will the young couple’s love overcome the hateful vengeance between their feuding families? The film’s title comes from the local river shared by the families, and which has witnessed their violent history.
Aavasavyuham (Streaming on SonyLIV)
The Malayalam language comedy drama sci-fi thriller mockumentary revolves around a tall, bald, and mysterious man named Joy, who has no identity proof documents with him. Joy has a unique connection with amphibians and other water creatures. He is portrayed as a giant man with a golden heart. All these attributes give the impression that he is not human.
Kaun Pravin Tambe? (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
Helmed by Jayprad Desai, ‘Kaun Pravin Tambe?’ narrates the incredible underdog story of Indian cricketer Pravin Tambe, who had made his cricket league debut at the age of 41. Interestingly, he had not even played any international or first-class cricket match before that. Shreyas Talpade has essayed the titular role of Pravin Tambe in the film.
Taanakkaran (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
Directed by Tamizh, the cop drama movie is ostensibly based on true events about police training in Tamil Nadu in 1997. The film’s underlying premise revolves around an aspiring cop (played by Vikram Prabhu) and how he struggles to survive the police officers’ training program under a ruthless training instructor and an abusive system.
Saani Kaayidham (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
Helmed by Arun Matheswaran, ‘Saani Kaayidham’ is a hard-hitting rural revenge drama that is set in the 1980s period. The movie features veteran filmmaker turned actor Selvaraghavan and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles of an ordinary man named Sangaiyya and his police constable half-sister Ponni, respectively. How they exact brutal revenge from those who had destroyed their family forms the film’s underlying plotline.
