Remember those days when people went crazy over the Bird Box challenge? The popularity of the first Bird Box (2018) instalment sparked the online meme challenge of people putting on blindfolds and navigating the world around them just like the characters of the original film. Those were indeed crazy times. Even Netflix had no alternative but to urge fans not to participate in the challenge due to the potential dangers that came with it. That very challenge may re-emerge on social media after the release of Bird Box Barcelona. Netflix has dropped the official teaser of the upcoming spin-off.
That’s right! Bird Box Barcelona is not a direct sequel to the 2018 film. In fact, the events of the film take place at the same time as the original Bird Box instalment. Although, the spin-off looks bigger, bolder, and scarier than the original film.
This is what producer Dylan Clark told EW about the film:
“The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey. Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges.”
The original Bird Box entry had Sandra Bullock in the leading role. The actress played Malorie Hayes, a survivor in the post-apocalyptic world filled with dangerous and mysterious entities which caused people to take their own lives when looking at them.
Directed by the duo of David Pastor and Alex Pastor, Bird Box Barcelona stars Mario Casas, Diego Calva, Georgina Campbell, Naila Schuberth, and more talents. It will release on Netflix on July 14. Stay tuned for more updates.
