‘Stranger Things’ actor David Harbour, who will next be seen essaying the role of Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian in the upcoming Marvel superhero film ‘Black Widow’, has apparently hinted at a prospective super-interesting project.
In a recent interaction at a virtual press conference, the 6-foot-3 actor has amusingly hinted at a possible future on-screen collaboration between his character Red Guardian sharing screen space with the iconic superhero Captain America. Captain America aka Steve Rogers’s role was recently essayed by Hollywood Hunk Chris Evans in the latest ‘Avengers’ franchise.
In Marvel Comics, Red Guardian is considered as the Soviet equivalent of Captain America. David Harbour’s character Alexei Shostakov was originally the second incarnation of Red Guardian. Interestingly, in the comics, the character was married to Natasha Romanova.
Formerly an elite pilot and KGB agent, Alexei Shostokov was eventually trained to become the Soviet version of Captain America. Red Guardian had also battled The Avengers and is also known for his subsequent encounter with Black Widow and Steve Rogers in the comics. In the ‘Black Widow’ film, David Harbour’s super-soldier character is being described as a father figure to Natasha Romanoff.
Fans of MCU and Captain America are all game for a prospective Cap vs Red Guardian showdown in a spin-off film or perhaps a web series, if the idea ever materializes. During the said virtual interaction where the Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was also present, whether this friendly banter between David Harbour and the cast members of ‘Black Widow’ would transform into something more concrete, remains to be seen.
The eagerly anticipated Marvel film ‘Black Widow’ starring Scarlett Johansson in the titular role is ostensibly set after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Some critics who have already seen the film have displayed an encouraging response. ‘Black Widow’ has been directed by Cate Shortland and is set to release on July 9, 2021.
