Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is getting a new animated series for the DC Universe (DCU) thanks to James Gunn. While Gunn and Peter Safran are building a new DCU, some characters from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) are finding new life, like Blue Beetle.
Maridueña talked in detail about the forthcoming Blue Beetle animated series in Lone Lobos’ podcast. The actor expressed his excitement about the series and teased that the superhero could get a new suit.
“In an animated show, the fact that this kid likes anime and can make whatever freaking weapon he wants and has this suit that lights up – if they do the suit right in animated. I wonder if it’s going to look exactly like the movie suit or if it’s going to look a little different.”
In addition, Maridueña seemed optimistic about the showrunners including anime references.
The Blue Beetle animated series seems like a right step from Gunn, considering how the 2023 live-action movie struggled financially. Waning fan interest in the DCEU and Hollywood strikes adversely impacted the film’s collection, which only grossed $130 million globally against a $125 million production budget. Conversely, the movie received positive responses from viewers. The animated series could take Jamie Reyes’ Blue Beetle to new heights. Moreover, it seems like a cost-effective solution for DC Studios and Warner Bros., as these production houses have endured substantial losses in recent years.
DC Studios’ biggest rival, Marvel Studios, has done a commendable job with the animated X-Men ‘97 Disney+ series, capturing the nostalgia and character dynamics that fans loved. The Blue Beetle animated series could aim for a similar balance of classic elements and fresh storytelling. It will be interesting to see how the Blue Beetle series fares. Stay tuned for more updates!
