BO Nos. Of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’: Only Saving Grace For The DC Film?

DC’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ has been a hot potato recently. Ever since Warner Bros. decided to go for the film’s hybrid release, i.e. both in theatres and on HBO Max, there was a huge buzz and anticipation that built up around it. But did ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ live up to all that expectation?

The answer to that would be tilted more towards negative. After the successful run of the first part in 2017, this sequel got a mixed response from the viewers with some praising it for its ‘escapist qualities’ while the others calling it a bit too clichéd. Even the graphics were not upto the mark.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ lost its certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, dropping to 65% and its imdb rating as of now is 5.8. This goes on to justify that ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ could not handle the weight of being a worthy sequel to an impressive first part.

Talking about the box office collection, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ grossed $16.7 million (US and Canada) and $85 million worldwide, in the opening weekend. Though this was the best in the current covid-19 pandemic scenario, it was way less (US & Canada) when compared to the first film’s opening weekend collection of around $103 million.

So even if WW84 did not impress the viewers and critics much, it did well at the box office, which ‘Tenet’ unfortunately could not despite blowing people’s mind with its complexity – a Christopher Nolan trademark. (‘Tenet’s’ opening weekend box office collection (US) was only $9.3 million.) In fact it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that its these BO numbers that serve as the saving grace for Patty Jenkins’ WW84.

Apart from the above, the film once again sparked the usual old debate among DC and Marvel fans. While DC fans think that ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is being overly criticised and in fact ticked all the blocks that it needed to, for Marvel fans it was a DC disaster yet again.

While these are just opinions, one cannot deny that Gal Gadot starrer ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is a film that could have done much more than what came out in the latest film and the 2017 version is a proof of it.

With official announcement coming in about director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot getting together again for the third part of the Wonder Woman franchise, it will be interesting to see if these real life wonder women can rekindle their magic which they could barely do in the recently released ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. What do you guys think, will third time be a charm for DC’S ‘Wonder Woman’?
