Music unites people, and so does cinema. So, when there was talk about a biographical film on Bob Marley, it really came out as an exciting project. Not only did it gift the fans some great songs, but it also managed to have a sizable box-office impact.
The film had a big boom in the West, but for the Indian audience, it got pretty limited exposure. Though Bob Marley has a big fan base in India, Paramount Pictures saw no point in giving it a mass release in India. So fans waited for an OTT release.
As of now, it was streaming in VOD format with a ₹119 price tag, but now it’s coming to regular OTT. It will be streaming on Prime Video starting July 3rd.
Talking about the plot of the 2024 film, Bob Marley announces a peace-promoting concert, Smile Jamaica, during a time of armed political conflict in Jamaica. He and his wife Rita are shot by assailants but recover in time to perform.
Saddened by the violence, Marley sends his family to the U.S. and goes to London to work on a new album, inspired by the film Exodus. The resulting album becomes a hit, popularizing reggae and Rastafari worldwide. During a European tour, Marley faces personal and professional conflicts and is diagnosed with cancer.
After reconciling with loved ones, he returns to Jamaica in 1978, forgives his assailant, and debuts a reconciliation song. The film ends with Marley performing “One Love” at a peace concert. A montage shows Marley’s real-life peace efforts and his performance in Zimbabwe before his death in 1981 at age 36.
This can definitely be a strong watch for the weekends, especially if you are a music lover. So, on July 3rd, tune into Prime Video and watch one of the best musical biography films ever. We are already going back to the age of biographies; one good one won’t hurt anyways.
