Digital viewers are in for a bonanza, as OTT platforms premiere several big ticket movies this week. Monday morning saw the surprising premiere of Irrfan-starrer Angrezi Medium on Disney Plus Hotstar. Today, Amazon Prime Video released the Telugu psychological thriller Madha on its platform. And tomorrow, that is 9th April, it will release Tamil film Dharala Prabhu for the benefit of viewers.
All three movies had released on 13th March in theatres, but were pulled down when theatres were shut down across India.
Disney’s just-released-in-theatres animated feature Onward too met the same fate and premiered on Disney Plus on 3rd April.
The Coronavirus outbreak prompted a nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Many key states had shut down public places such as malls and theatres even before the lockdown was announced. Among the affected entities were several big ticket movies which had just released in theatres, but which had to tragically cut down their run time in theatres due to the lockdown.
The makers of Angrezi Medium had initially planned to re-release the movie in theatres once the lockdown was lifted. But with that not happening anytime soon, they thought it fit to release the movie on OTT. Likewise with the other two movies.
Apart from these, Aditya Rawal’s debut movie Bamfaad had initially planned for a theatrical release. He’s the son of actor couple Paresh Rawal and Swaroo Sampat. But with the Coronavirus outbreak raging on, they thought it fit to release the movie on OTT. It will thus premiere this Friday, 10th April, on ZEE5.
Big ticket Tamil film Naragasooran is also likely to take the OTT route to release.
In the meanwhile, digital viewers are enjoying a surfeit of great movies from the safety of their homes.
