Bong Joon-ho To Work On His First Ever Space Opera!

2020’s three-time Academy Award Winning writer-director, Bong Joon-ho, has made his next big project known and it is an impressive one – he is teaming up with Robert Pattinson and Warner Bros. Pictures to write and direct a new science fiction film. This movie will be based on the upcoming Edward Ashron sci-fi novel, Mickey7. Bong Joon-ho, himself is getting ready to produce the film through his production company Offscreen alongside Dooho Choi through Kate Street Picture Company and Plan B. This sci-fi flick will be his first space opera feature as well.

So what is the Mickey7 all about? Well, according to the synopsis, the sci-fi novel will be set in the future and based on a worker called Mickey. Mickey is an Expendable AKA a “disposable human employee”. He is part of the expedition team sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim and whenever a dangerous mission comes up, possibly even suicidal, the crew turns to Mickey. However, if Mickey dies, he is cloned with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, the seventh iteration of Mickey AKA Mickey7 finally understands his job…and also why no one else from the expedition wanted it in the first place.

If you can’t wait for the film, then check out the book when it becomes available next month, on February 15th 2022. Knowing Bong Joon-ho, the film will not be an exact replication of the book, so we do not expect much spoilers either. The Snowpiercer director has been waiting since 2020 before his eye caught an interesting project. And that came in the form of an unpublished manuscript from Edward Aston. After a few weeks of additions both Joon-Ho and the production company execs. were impressed by The Batman actor, Robert Pattinson. This film deal will also be the second deal penned between Joon-ho and Warner Bros., the first one being a series based on the South Korean cult classic, Parasite.
