A huge part of Hollywood cinema culture is made of book adaptations. Movie makers reach out to the the best stories and best selling authors to give their words, a visual. Should this be followed by our very own Bollywood? Let’s find out!
Evergreen Harry Potter and Twilight series; dystopian Hunger Games and Divergent series; and a few of top grossing movies like The Da Vinci code, Life of Pi, Alice in Wonderland, The Hobbit, Fifty shades of grey, and IT have all originated from books. In fact, most of Hollywood’s best work falls under book-to-film category.
However, Bollywood works either on original content or South Indian remakes. Only a meager section of Bollywood has tried its hands on book adaptations. A few successful ones are 3 Idiots, Parineeta, Omkara, Kai Poche, and 2 States. It’s surprising that Bollywood is unable to decode the success behind Hollywood movies – books! There are numerous novels narrating phenomenal stories, deserving to be on the big screen. These adaptations can help Bollywood reach a larger audience (since the number of viewers are more than readers) and save time in coming up with an original story. Not only this, a highly acclaimed novel turned to visuals can produce a high grossing movie in no time. Adaptations of the right books with the required amount of effort can help Bollywood come at par with or even surpass it’s biggest competitor – Hollywood!
The release of Dil Bechara and upcoming releases like The Girl on the Train, The Exile: The Flight of Osama Bin Laden, and Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister, are a hint that Bollywood is trying to up it’s game. All the above mentioned titles had been pages earlier. With this recent development in Indian cinema, we’re hopeful. Will all these movies be at the top of the chart? Only time will tell!
