Fans of Netflix’s terrific Danish political drama ‘Borgen’ are in for a treat tomorrow. A new season of the compelling drama gears up to premiere on Netflix on June 2. Titled ‘Borgen: Power And Glory’, the new season is effectively Borgen Season 4, but premieres as a standalone series on Netflix.
‘Borgen’, which means ‘Castle’ or ‘Palace’ in Danish, is the moniker given to Denmark’s seat of power — the Christiansborg Palace – where the Danish Parliament resides. The series centres on young politician Birgitte Nyborg Christensen (Sidse Babett Knudsen), who beats the odds to become the first female Prime Minister of Denmark. The first three seasons of Borgen focus on the myriad challenges that arise in Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg rising career and Danish politics. The show premiered way back in 2010 on Danish TV, and ran for three seasons until 2013.
‘Borgen’ had more or less wrapped its run after Season 3. But then Netflix came into the picture, and acquired the show for streaming on its platform. The streaming giant also pushed for a new season of Borgen; and here we are with Borgen Season 4, aka ‘Borgen: Power And Glory’. The show returns with a new season after a long gap of almost a decade!
Borgen: Power And Glory sees Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg in a new avatar – as the Danish foreign minister – a position she had acquired at the end of Borgen Season 3. The discovery of major oil reserves in Greenland leads to fresh headaches for Nyborg – political, diplomatic, environmental; as well as in-house rivalry with her boss, the Prime Minister – a younger, equally dynamic woman. The US and China want a piece of Greenland’s oil pie; the environmentalists are up in arms at the cost to the climate in extracting the oil; and her own party people have turned hostile. It’s a tinderbox situation for Nyborg, one she must navigate all alone.
Borgen: Power And Glory is a worthy carry-forward to the blockbuster Borgen series – easily one of the best political dramas to ever hit TV.
Borgen: Power And Glory premieres on Netflix on June 2 that is tomorrow. Have a look at the trailer of the show here –
