Brie Larson May Leave MCU For Good After ‘The Marvels’

MCU’s upcoming big-budget flick, The Marvels, may get bombed at the box office. The Brie Larson starrer sequel is expected to collect $50-75 million in its opening weekend, less than half of Captain Marvel’s opening weekend collection. And this scenario does not mark the end of MCU’s growing list of woes. Some latest reports have revealed that Larson may quit the Marvel Cinematic Universe after The Marvels’ theatrical release.

An excerpt from the newly released novel ‘MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios’ has caused chaos on social media, which teases Larson’s plans to hang up her Captain Marvel cape for good.

One of the novel’s writers, Joanna Robinson, claims that Brie Larson “grew disillusioned” with portraying Captain Marvel after facing massive online abuse and hate following the gigantic financial success of the 2019 superhero flick. Robinson also supported her claim in a recent interview with ‘The Watch’ podcast. “[Marvel Studios] put Brie Larson in [a prominent place in the MCU]. I don’t know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role, necessarily. But the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn’t want to play Carol Danvers anymore,” Robinson said.

Let’s have a look at that excerpt as well!

“The future of those Marvel icons was unclear. The departure of franchise anchors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson had already taken its toll, as had the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, but other MCU stalwarts were heading for the exits. The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland.”

Captain Marvel was a huge financial success for Marvel Studios. The Brie Larson starrer earned over $1.1 billion against the production budget of $175 million and received a ‘fresh’ 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 553 reviews. However, the audience’s reaction towards the film was mixed. Many fans criticised the superheroine’s character representation in the film, believing Larson’s Captain Marvel looked “too egoistic” or “bland”. This scenario forced Samuel L. Jackson and the rest of the film’s cast, along with Kevin Feige, to defend the Academy Award-winning actress.

Larson also frequently faces criticisms about being racist and sexist. In one of her speeches, she reacted harshly to the fact that the majority of film critics were white men. Check out the whole video below to get a clear idea!

On many occasions, Larson has responded either sarcastically or strangely when asked simple questions. In one of the interviews, she was asked about how long she wanted to play Captain Marvel. This is what she said: ”I don’t know, does anyone want me to do it again?”

But there is a fair share of MCU fans who believe that Brie Larson deserves all the respect in the world, and she does not deserve the hate at all. There is no denying that the Captain Marvel star is one of the most talented actresses of our generation. The Room (2015) treasures her best acting work to date, for which she bagged the Oscar for Best Actress as well. She has also starred in hit films like 21 Jump Street (2012), Don Jon (2013), Trainwreck (2015), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Fast X (2023), and more.

Will Brie Larson really leave the MCU for good? Only time will tell us. Stay tuned for more updates.
