Telecom majors and the streaming giant’s are banking on each other, with the former trying to attract and retain customers and the latter in an attempt to increase their user base with focus on family audience, in their mutually beneficial partnerships.
The latest tariff and bundled broadband packages offered by the telecom companies have been combined with free access to some of the country’s top OTT platforms. This is a strategically smart move on both their parts since the pandemic induced lockdown has restricted both contact and recreation of their users, who now turn to digital medium for both.
Talking about the packages, Jio stands out as the frontrunner with the launch of its latest JioPostpaid Plus offering. Under this there are five plans- ₹399, ₹599, ₹799, ₹999 & ₹1,499. This latest range of bundled plans provide not only the usual calling, SMS and Jio apps bit, but also enhanced data ranging from 75GB to 300GB monthly, alongwith free subscription to Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+Hotstar.
There is also the provision of providing free sim cards for family users except in the ₹399 plan, which can help OTT players target the family audience base. While there are similar plan offerings by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, but neither is as lucrative as the one by Reliance Jio.
Other than the mobile plans, Jio and Airtel are providing bundled broadband packages. The ₹1,499 JioFiber Diamond plan, is a better way to target family audience base. Under this, it gives 300Mbps speed and free access to 12 OTT apps- Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, JioCinema, Zee5, Sony Liv, VOOT, Alt Balaji, Sun NXT, Shemaroo, Lionsgate Play, and Hoichoi.
Similar deals have been signed by Airtel XStream with OTT players like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar and Zee5, to provide premium bundled service to its customers. The airtel plans range from ₹499 to ₹3,999 with variations in data speed and services.
These bundleld packages, whose prices have been slashed around 40% by telecom providers is still a big boost to the fixed broadband network market in India. Such aggressive market strategies by both telcos and big OTT services, is being received very well by the customers who are constantly stuck to Internet for any and everything these days.
