Burning is the new documentary that is streaming on Prime Video. It is based on the massive forest fire that broke out in Australia in 2019 and continued till 2020. For Australian people particularly, the summer was known as Black Summer.
Australia is known for wildfires but in recorded human history it was never as bad as what happened in 2019-20. Unfortunately, even the government was not as responsive as it should have been. People fought back on their own but they were ineffective in saving thousands of animals who lost their lives in it. Over 50 million acres of forest was burnt. Burning peaks into the lives of people who were directly affected by it.
The director Eva Orner is an Academy® & Emmy-award winning Australian filmmaker. This series is not only about the Australian wildfires but also about the climate change that needs to be addressed.
With that, an interesting question that comes to our mind is, why don’t we have movies that focus on environmental issues? We have plenty of movies on crime, drama, romance, action and a lot more. But we simply don’t have enough movies that focus on environmental issues. There are some low budget animes made for children but if we talk about some impactful cinema, then it is simply not there.
It is a high time filmmakers should acknowledge the existence of climate change. Because cinema is an extremely influential tool, if it is not used for educating people about environmental issues then it will be a big shame for the entire cinema industry of the world.
