Angrezi Medium, the keenly awaited Irrfan Khan movie with a stellar cast, released on OTT today, barely a couple of weeks after its run ended prematurely at the box office due to the Coronavirus lockdown. The movie released on Disney Plus Hotstar at 12 midnight last night.
The release of the film on OTT means that the makers have shelved their original plan of re-releasing Angrezi Medium in theatres across India once the Coronavirus threat abated and the lockdown was lifted.
It’s as clear as day that there’s no possibility of the pandemic abating anytime soon. Hence, releasing Angrezi Medium on OTT is a smart and calculated move from Maddock Films, the makers of the movie.
It’s a win-win for both parties concerned. The newly created Disney Plus Hotstar gets a chance to establish its footprint among viewers. And Maddock Films gets to ensure that the movie gets a decent viewership, not to say a whopping amount of money from Disney Plus Hotstar for the streaming rights of the movie.
Angrezi Medium had first released in theatres on 13th March, and had received a decent opening and heartwarming reviews from critics and audiences. But fate had something else in store for the movie. The Coronavirus outbreak first led to malls and theatres being shut down in several states, and finally a complete lockdown. The movie thus had to be pulled down from theatres prematurely.
Angrezi Medium marks the return of Irrfan Khan to movies after his very public fight against cancer. Besides Irrfan, the movie features Radhika Madan, Kareena Kapoor, Deepak Dobriyal, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Tripathi, Kiku Sharda and Ranvir Shorey in pivotal roles.
Angrezi Medium has begun streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar VIP. Watch it if you missed watching it in the theatres.
