Can a Pay per View Model on OTT’s Kill the Theatres in India?

The traditional entertainment industry has already taken a massive hit, and many experts are predicting that most will not be able to recover from this major set back, but as you already know, one man’s adversity is another man’s opportunity and the OTT platforms have been quick to pounce on it.

OTT platforms give you the option of availing the best content from across the globe in the comfort of your homes along with low prices. In light of the covid pandemic when theatres were forced to shut down, one could see many films preferring to go the OTT way as there seemed to be no end in sight.

While many platforms released these films as part of their monthly or annual subscriptions a few of them like Zee5 tried a pay per view format with the likes of Khaali Peeli and Ka Pae Ranasingam, while this has still not become the norm amongst the powerful platforms, it seems like a really lucrative deal for both the producers of the movie as well as the platform as the options seem both cost-effective and convenient.

However, if this does take place, there is a strong feeling that it can be the final nail in the coffin of the mainstream industry, which is already undergoing a massive restructuring. Innovation is necessary for any field, but along with it, there also comes an enormous burden of trying to involve everybody.

It just seems that those at the lower rungs of the pyramid are going to be affected the most.
