The announcement of Aitraaz 2 by producer Subhash Ghai has created much excitement more especially since the original 20 years old film, which was released in 2004, brought themes of sexual harassment and power dynamics into main stream featuring Priyanka Chopra in a role that very provocatively challenged traditional gender narratives.
With Ghai, now collaborating with Amit Rai, whose very recent success in OMG 2 indicates a lot of promise, the expectation from the sequel will be bit high that it will address issues of the modern day with the same boldness and creativeness.
Amit Rai has very adeptly shown his ability to carry on the topics relating to modern issues in his work. For example, in OMG 2, he relates the imperative need for sex education in a very subtle, relatable and funny way.
He always tries strives to humour with sensitivity so he never alienates an audience while discussing serious issues. His way of carrying realistic contemporary challenges defines a deep understanding of today’s society. Therefore, he is indeed a good choice to carry on Aitraaz 2.
However, the challenge for Rai will be to ensure that Aitraaz 2 stays relevant to the audience of today as it addresses complex issues like consent and workplace dynamics. It cannot slip into hackneyed rhetoric but has to feed more complex narratives, reflecting realities in contemporary relationships.
For this, his track record clearly shows he is definitely up to the task, when it comes to blending entertainment with great social commentary.
Even though Aitraaz 2 has a lot of expectations, it is unclear if it will actually take the forefront and develop a story that is captivating enough to spark important discussions about women and power in the modern world.
There is hope for this sequel, which, under Amit Rai’s direction, will be both amusing and demonstrate more information about topics that are important today.
