Disney+ Hotstar dropped the trailer for their upcoming direct-to-OTT releasing Malayalam feature, Lalitham Sundaram, over 12 hours ago. The streaming platform has been releasing some brilliant content but has not been doing so good with its Malayalam premieres so far. The first two direct-to-OTT released movies Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham and Keshu Ee Veedinte Nadhan both got below-average to mixed reviews from critics and subscribers alike. The third movie, Bro Daddy, did better than both these films and has been tentatively called a success (although the movie has many other problems). Disney+ Hotstar will be hoping to get a streak of “hit” direct-to-OTT Malayalam releases with the upcoming contemporary drama-comedy, Lalitham Sundaram.
Compared to Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and even Netflix aren’t doing so well in the Malayalam direct-to-OTT films department. Netflix, however, has managed to make a name for themselves within the Malayalam film industry, with the Tovino Thomas starring, superhero flick, Minnal Murali. SonyLIV has managed to premiere many brilliant Malayalam movies on their platform, while ZEE5 has released a couple of decent ones as well. Compared to that, the above mentioned Malayalam films are not even worth mentioning.
The upcoming comedy-drama features Manju Warrier and Biju Menon – two Malayalam actors that were doing well in theatres before the pandemic stopped film releases altogether. Lalitham Sundaram, like most movies, was expected to release in theatres before the Covid conditions within the state made its theatrical release almost impossible. This upcoming movie will be both actors’ first direct-to-OTT release, which many are looking forward to watching once it drops on Disney+ Hotstar.
Lalitham Sundaram will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar (as mentioned earlier) the next weekend, on 18th March 2022. The previously mentioned trailer is available for streaming below:
