Christopher Paolini’s widely admired book series titled ‘The Inheritance Cycle’ is getting the small-screen treatment and the project is currently in the initial stages of development at the streaming service Disney Plus. The tetralogy of the acclaimed young adult fantasy novels mainly comprises four books namely Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance.
For those not in the know, Paolini’s first book of the same series ‘Eragon’ was previously adapted into a feature film of the same name which was released in the year 2006, that is, four years after the first book was self-published by the author. The movie featured Ed Speleers in the titular role and co-starred Jeremy Irons, Rachel Weisz, and John Malkovich, amongst others. In spite of its commercial success, the movie received negative feedback which led to cancellation of the film’s subsequent planned sequels.
The critical failure of the 2006 ‘Eragon’ movie leads to an obvious question: Will the Disney+ series adaptation of the ‘Eragon’ book series be received well by the OTT audiences and critics this time? The answer according to us is in the affirmative. And the reason is the creative involvement of the most important person related to the upcoming series: the author himself – Christopher Paolini.
Yes, Christopher Paolini will be serving as a co-writer of the ‘Eargon’ series adaptation for Disney+. And there is an interesting incident behind the series adaptation. In the year 2021, Christopher Paolini took to Twitter and posted #EragonRemake. The Tweet worked big time as fans of the book series expressed their keen interest for a worthy adaptation. And now, around a year later, the update for Eragon’s Disney+ series adaptation has come out. The power of the internet. Presently, the adaptation rights for the ‘Eragon’ book series are held by Disney.
With Christopher Paolini at the creative forefront, we have our hopes high that this time, the ‘Eragon’ book series will get the on-screen treatment it deserves. And there is a good reason for that. Take the example of HBO’s highly acclaimed ‘Game of Thrones’ series based on George R. R. Martin’s book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. After D. B. Weiss and David Benioff pitched the idea for a ‘Game of Thrones’ series adaptation to George R. R. Martin and HBO acquired the rights for the same, Martin was brought in as the show’s executive producer. The deal was inked, and the rest is history.
Coming back to Christopher Paolini’s ‘Eragon’ book series, the basic plot revolves around the titular protagonist Eragon, who is a teenage boy living in the fictional world of Alagaesia. With the help of his dragon Saphira, the boy sets out to defeat the evil king Galbatorix and to free the kingdom from his autocratic rule.
