Can India Ever Make a Superhero Franchise to Compete Against DC/Marvel?

India is known as the land of diverse cultures and religions, yet whenever you look at Bollywood’s attempt to make a decent superhero movie, you cannot help but hide your face in shame. There have been a few flicks here and there but none which have captured the imagination.

This begs us to ask the question. Will India ever be able to come up with such content to rival the likes of Hollywood? India is rich in its history and heritage, and Indian Mythology could be a great place for filmmakers to start their search in hunt of the perfect desi superhero.

This will not only provide filmmakers with a majestic background for their characters but also prove to be a great way to impart some knowledge about our heritage in a fun and riveting manner.

All superheroes are born from comic books, and thus a fan following is created around the aura and abilities of the character in the picture. While it may not be at the level of some of the best comic book companies our very own ‘Raj Comics’ is undoubtedly a great place to start in search of some indigenous superheroes with the likes of Aghori Agyat, Nagraj, Doga, Dhruv and many more.

While the likes of Bhavesh Joshi: Superhero and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota proving some respite for the viewers these experiences have been few and far apart, and their box office collections tell you why creators are averse to taking such risks. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota may not be an out and out vigilante movie, but if the filmmakers give it a little thought, they can indeed create a franchise around this concept. It kind of rolls over into the whole ‘Kick-Ass’ vibe.

There is certainly no shortage of stories when it comes to creating a superhero from our motherland, but the main question is. Are the new age filmmakers willing to take risks and most importantly, will they be able to execute it in a matter that genuinely glorifies it?
