There were reports in Telugu media that Tollywood Hero Nagarjuna’s Wild Dog is going to skip its theatrical release and stream online on Netflix. The reports also mention that the movie will be premiered for the Republic Day weekend. There is no official confirmation about that from Netflix and the makers of the movie.
However, if that happens, it will be a strategic move from Netflix. Looking at the slate of all OTT platforms for January, there is no single Telugu movie releasing this month. There are quite a few web series lined up by Aha Video for this month but there are no films. So, the audience who would not like to go to the theaters for the festive releases may opt for Wild Dog on Netflix. Since there are a handful of films releasing in theaters, everyone is playing the waiting game, resulting in no new releases.
That may increase the subscriber base of the OTT major. Telugu is one language where Netflix can make inroads in the coming days. There are have been half-hearted attempts by the OTT major during the Lockdown but nothing worked. The movie directed by a newcomer, Solomon will see Nagarjuna as an encounter specialist, ACP Vijay Varma in the film. The movie is based on some real-event and is about an encounter that happened on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
