India has always been the land of stories and creative individuals. There are still many under the radar filmmakers who have done some great work but never really got the limelight in the Bollywood industry due to its monopoly or aversion to taking risks dues to the financial disasters that they may prove to be.
Gems like ‘Kadvi Hawa’ and ‘Ankhon Dekhi’ are just a couple of cinematic treats that were so realistic and spoke to the audience but still did dismal business at the box office with the former doing only close to 30 lakhs of business in the box office. Many yet haven’t even heard about them due to the limited production budget and marketing.
OTT platforms have not only given such filmmakers the chance to showcase their prowess but also provided them more resources and a broader audience base which has made it much easier for them to create films or series that are at par with the international ones.
Delhi Crime (A Netflix Original series) bagging the first-ever international Emmy for an Indian show goes to show the kind of reforms the OTT platforms have created with respect to the realistic storytelling and background of the shows.
There have been other shows on Amazon Prime and Netflix that have won nominations too. Still, while they may not have won the prestigious award, it is testament to the kind of stories that are being created by the top OTT platforms are not only adored by the local audience but also appreciated by an international one.
The desi factor has increased when it comes to international awards, and I think the OTT platforms are to be thanked for a majority of it.
