Shiladitya Moulik will be coming back to Bollywood with a new folklore thriller. The movie will be produced by ‘The Kerala Story’ director Sudipto Sen.
The working title for the movie is ‘Chadak’ and it will deal with the subject of Bengal’s ‘Gajon Puja’. Shiladitya Moulik is a well known filmmaker from Bengal who has directed popular films like ‘Sweater’, ‘Hridpindo’ and ‘Cheene Badam’. Shiladitya actually started his journey with Hindi films only. His debut film ‘Mrs. Scooter’ was not a very well known one and the second Hindi film had been on his mind for a long time. The movie got postponed many times after the lockdown and finally it will be realised now.
Chadak will be set in various locations in Bardhaman and Purulia. The Gajon Puja is a popular worship ritual which came from non-vedic traditions and incorporates many violent practices. There are many superstitions and strange beliefs regarding the worship and it is tabooed in the larger part of the state.
Folklore thrillers are becoming the next big thing in the Indian film industries and with Kantara, the genre got a huge boost. The recent Malayalam movie ‘Bramayugam’ was an interesting addition to the list. But will Chadak be able to level up with these movies? The subject is very sensitive and there are chances of huge controversy and criticism for the movie. It has potential, and Shiladitya is a trusted director but he has to break free from the tropes that he has used for his past films.
