Can the OTT Culture Save Bollywood From Becoming a Remake Factory?

We hate to admit this, but Bollywood has been mostly stagnant in terms of vision and creativity in the last few years as they have mostly resorted to making remakes of hit regional movies or biopics. An important factor as to why this takes place is because the makers of the film have to recoup their money and that is only possible if the audiences come to the theatres in a limited period of time.

Whereas OTT platforms have completely changed that dynamics allowing filmmakers all around the world to take more risks and bring out more experimental content to their audiences anywhere in the world.

Bollywood has tried to stick with the typical genres that have bought in the masses, and this usually includes the backing of a superstar in a leading role. While this isn’t true for all films and some people are trying to push the envelope, they eventually get discouraged due to the inadequate response from the audiences or the terrible box office collections that they have.

With a majority of the youth on platforms such as these, you are bound to create fascinating and riveting content because let’s be honest the old helpless damsel in distress formula doesn’t work on a much more informed and educated generation.

The OTT platforms have also given a stage to new genres being created for the Indian audiences rather than having to rely on filmmakers from other countries. This gives us something more to cheer as we can see homegrown stories and characters take full root and become larger than life in front of our eyes.
