Tumbbad, a movie that came way back in 2018, was called a failure in box office then. It was made on a budget of 15 crores and could hardly recover the amount after 8 weeks of screening in theatres. The movie was directed by Rahi Anil Barve and featured Sohum Shah as the lead actor. Sohum Shah was also the producer for the movie. Though the movie failed terribly in theatres, still after its release on OTT platforms, the movie gained a lot of popularity becoming a cult classic. The movie already had been critically acclaimed and was being considered a cinematic genius. Now, the movie is set to be released on 13th September 2024 in theatres.
The movie will be released amidst the festival of re-releases in India. Already many films, timeless classics, cult classics and audience favourites have already been released this year. Movies like Rockstar, Laila Majnu, Gangs of Wasseypur are among some of the movies that could not succeed in the box office and are now being released again. They all received a good amount of reception from the audience. Tumbbad too eyes the same treatment. Currently Kantara, Laila Majnu, Gangs of Wasseypur and Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein are running in theatres among re-releases. Tumbbad expects a good reception among them.
The initial time of September is going to be devoid of a good Hindi movie. Emergency, which was supposed to be released on 6th, has now been postponed. This gives additional advantage to the movie. Though GOAT is releasing on 6th, it will only be available in Tamil and Telugu languages. Hence, the Hindi speaking audience will tend to move towards Tumbbad. For September, possibly, due to the dearth of good Hindi cinema, Tumbbad will be on top.
Although Gangs of Wasseypur also has been released, still the stunning graphics of Tumbbad and the spectacular visuals combined with genius cinematography makes it more worthy of watching on a big screen. Gangs of Wasseypur on the other hand, is a film that is very mundane and has the same experience in theatre or on one’s smartphone. Concludingly, Tumbbad, owing to its quality and huge following can expect to be one of the biggest re-releases of the month.
