The 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be held from July 6, 2021, to July 17, 2021. The prestigious festival is packed with some highly anticipated films from acclaimed filmmakers including Paul Verhoeven, Sean Penn, Wes Anderson, and Asghar Farhadi, amongst others.
Out of the many films to be screened at the Cannes, we have compiled a list of five films with an interesting premise that we should look forward to. All these films are competing for Palme d’Or – the highest prize at the Cannes festival.
The first film on our list is incidentally the opening film at the Cannes. Helmed by Leos Carax, Annette is a musical film that follows a Los Angeles based couple – a stand-up comedian and a renowned singer. Their dazzling world takes an interesting turn when their daughter Annette is born with a unique talent.
The film is helmed by ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ director Wes Anderson. It purportedly revolves around several plotlines based on stories published in the French Dispatch magazine. The film boasts an ensemble cast including Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Willem Dafoe, Bill Murray, Christopher Waltz, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson and Elizabeth Moss.
A Hero
The film is written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. With the plot of the film being kept under the wraps, it has further added to the curiosity quotient around the film’s release at Cannes. The little that is known about the plot is that it follows the protagonist Rahim who gets imprisoned for his inability to pay a debt. How he convinces his creditor to take back his complaint ostensibly forms the film’s underlying premise.
A loving father John Vogel (Sean Penn) leads a double life – one as an honest person and another as a con artist. The film is helmed by Sean Penn himself and also features Josh Brolin and Penn’s own daughter Dylan Penn. She plays the role of Penn’s reel-life daughter.
Titane is actually a metal that is highly resistant to corrosion and heat with high tensile strength alloys. It’s often used in medical prostheses due to its pronounced biocompatibility. How the metal’s properties will relate to the film’s plot remains to be seen. The film’s basic premise revolves around a father reuniting with his son, who has been missing for ten years.
