Cannes2022: Shaunak Sen’s ‘All That Breathes’ Wins Best Documentary

And it’s a proud moment for India as Shaunak Sen’s ‘All That Breathes’ wins the best documentary award at the Cannes Film Festival 2022. ‘All That Breathes’ was the only Indian film to make it to the list of films to be screened at Cannes 2022. It was screened in the ‘special screenings’ section.

All That Breathes’ received the prestigious L’Œil d’or 2022 award and the jury’s note for the same read, “L’Oeil d’or goes to a film that, in a world of destruction, reminds us that every life matters, and every small action matters. You can grab your camera, you can save a bird, you can hunt for some moments of stealing beauty, it matters. It’s an inspirational journey in observation of three Don Quijotes who may not save the whole world but do save their world.”

Directed by Shaunak Sen, ‘All That Breathes’ is a story set in Delhi where in an unbreathable atmosphere, the threat of interreligious massacres floats in the air. Two brothers, Nadeem and Saud, along with their assistant dedicate their lives to save the majestic migratory black kites that are destroyed by human madness.

The documentary had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in January where it received the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition. ‘All That Breathes’ is produced by Shaunak Sen, Aman Mann and Teddy Leifer. Rise Films and Kiterabbit Films are the production companies bankrolling the film.

‘All That Breathes’ is set to release in theatres this fall in the US along with festival rollouts. Also, the television rights for ‘All That Breathes’ has been acquired by HBO Documentary Films and post the theatrical run it will be available on HBO and HBO Max in 2023.
