Marvel Studios is looking to start 2025 with a bang through Captain America: Brave New World, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, aka the new Captain America. Tickets for the movie are now on sale in the US and select countries. However, the movie’s pre-sales performance so far has been somewhat disappointing.
According to popular box office analyst Luiz Fernando, the pre-sales for Brave New World are 1.4 times better than The Marvels and Joker 2 and are roughly on par with Eternals. However, they are “nowhere near” the pre-sales of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which premiered in theaters on the same weekend in 2023.
This update doesn’t sound auspicious for Marvel, considering Quantumania did not perform as expected, earning only $476 million globally. Eternals barely crossed the $400 million mark, while The Marvels and Joker 2 are considered some of the biggest financial failures in the superhero genre.
That said, it’s too soon to predict a movie’s box office collections. Pre-sales, in fact, don’t provide a clear picture but do indicate the level of buzz surrounding a movie, which, for Captain America 4, appears to be low.
However, early projections suggest that Brave New World could earn between $86 and $95 million during its three-day opening weekend, with its total US collections potentially reaching $180–250 million.
While these projections may sound good for other movies, that’s not the case with Captain America: Brave New World, which reportedly has a budget exceeding $200 million.
This means that the upcoming Anthony Mackie starrer will need to perform well in foreign markets as well to reach the break-even point.
The low buzz surrounding Captain America 4 stems from the results of the initial test screenings, which were highly polarizing. This reportedly forced Marvel to make significant changes to the movie’s storylines and conduct major reshoots.
Usually, when a movie with a massive budget undergoes such changes, fans tend to lose faith in it. This means that Brave New World not only has to perform well financially but must also impress critics and win the hearts of viewers.
Captain America: Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Shira Haas, Danny Ramirez, Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson, and many other talented actors. The movie is set to arrive in theaters on February 14. Stay tuned for more updates.
