Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy debuted on January 31, 1999. Since then, the series has been thriving under its creator’s ‘wild and insane’ direction and now celebrates its 25th anniversary. Undoubtedly, Family Guy has now become a cornerstone of animated sitcoms.
In 2002, Fox cancelled Family Guy due to low viewership. However, the show was revived in 2004, thanks to high viewership from reruns and record-breaking DVD sales. Earlier this month, Fox renewed the globally prominent animated series for Seasons 22 and 23.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Seth MacFarlane has confirmed that Family Guy won’t end anytime soon. “It’s still surviving and thriving. It still has a sizable audience and is a perfect example of there being an appetite for something. So we continue to feed the beast. There’s no indication that the show is going to end anytime soon.”
While reflecting on his journey as the creator and co-showrunner of Family Guy, MacFarlane also revealed that he felt “strange” after reaching the 25th anniversary.
“I’ve just been going at a dead run ever since the show premiered,” he added. “Between then and now just feels like one really long day to me.”
Family Guy consists of a total of 418 episodes. Since its inception, the series has shattered numerous records and earned many accolades. In 2009, it was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Over the years, the show has received mostly positive reviews. However, it has also endured allegations of character stereotypes, sexism, homophobia, and racism. Despite all the controversies, the series is still going strong. Season 22 will premiere on Fox on October 1, 2023.
Set in Quahog, Rhode Island, Family Guy revolves around the dysfunctional Griffin family, consisting of Peter, Lois, Meg, Chris, Stewie, and their anthropomorphic dog, Brian. Apart from Seth MacFarlane, the series stars Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Mila Kunis, Mike Henry, Patrick Warburton, and Arif Zahir. Indian viewers can watch the show on Disney+ Hotstar.
