Central Government Ready with Anti Piracy Laws! Will it Help?

Wake up and smell some coffee. There is a new law in the market. What does it do? Simply promises to attack against piracy. The central government may even make a task force that would help in this war against piracy.

Will it help though?

We seriously doubt it.

You see, piracy is almost inevitable. Consider the case of porn. So many websites were banned so many years ago. Still, India is one of the top consumers of porn in the world.

Well, let’s tell you the news first.

To fight against piracy, the central government might create a special team to carry out investigations.

In the latest draft of the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill 2024, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has suggested that no one should be allowed to broadcast a program without getting permission from the copyright owners.

As part of the anti-piracy rules in the Draft Bill, the government defined piracy as the unauthorized copying, sharing, broadcasting, or online publication of any program without the permission of the copyright owners.

The Draft Bill states: “No person shall include any program in their broadcasting service if the program is protected by copyright under the Copyright Act, 1957 (14 of 1957) unless they have received a license from the copyright owners.”

The central government may create a special task force to investigate and fight against piracy. This section does not limit the rights and remedies available to rights holders under any other current laws.

Clear?

We can only be hopeful whether it would work or not. In a world of free internet, it is next to impossible to curb any kind of content. People have 10s of ways to dodge these measures and they won’t think twice before acting smarter than the task force.
