Challengers Is Now Facing An ‘Ending Issue’

Talking about the recent hit in the sports industry, “Challengers” is definitely a new spice in the universe, especially with the amalgamation of sex and sports. The new sports romance starring Zendaya is making major waves among fans. However, despite fans being happy with the overall experience, there is a significant ‘IF’ problem.

“Challengers” has an open ending that is causing some upset and misinterpretation among fans.

Emphasizing how the film ended, the camera freezes on Zendaya for the final frame as she screams, “come on!” before the film fades into oblivion. This scene is now at the center of attention and brings back the problem of the Open Ending.

Zendaya discussed how her mother interpreted the ending of the film differently. While Zendaya perceived her character’s smile at the end positively, her mom believed it conveyed bitterness as they no longer needed her.

Director Guadagnino appreciated this alternate perspective, likening Zendaya’s character to Lermontov from “The Red Shoes,” orchestrating events. He found value in interpretations diverging from their intentions, suggesting that the smile could imply various meanings depending on how one interprets the freeze frame.

“That’s so cool. I really like that read,” added O’Connor. “I think that’s the point; everyone’s got a different perspective on it.”

“Isn’t it so beautiful that we have an open ending that people like?” Guadagnino asked his stars. “Because everybody says, ‘No, never open ending. You have to know what happens at the end.’”

Talking about the ending, an open ending always creates confusion, and that is the fun part. Not all forms of art need to reach a conclusion, and sometimes, a film like this makes you imagine, which is always a great aspect.
