James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has been on a box-office record-breaking spree ever since its theatrical release. The massively mounted film has grossed over a whopping $2.1 billion at the box office globally and is expected to surpass ‘Titanic’ in the near future to become the third highest grossing movie of all time. The Academy Award nominated film’s splendid box office performance has paved the way for its next three sequels.
About its very next sequel tentatively titled ‘Avatar 3’, which was filmed along with ‘Avatar 2’, it was previously revealed that legendary actor comedian Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter Oona Chaplin was cast in it.
Recently, ‘Avatar’ producer Jon Landau has divulged further details (via Empire Magazine) about exactly what role Oona Chaplin would be playing in ‘Avatar 3’. Her character is called Varang and is being described as the leader of Ash people, an aggressive, evil, and volcanic Na’vi tribe. So, in a way, Oona Chaplin’s character seems to be one of the main antagonists in ‘Avatar 3’, if not the primary villain.
Oona Chaplin has earlier been a part of HBO’s ‘Game of Throne’ series where she essayed the role of Talisa Maegyr, a healer on a battlefield. Besides ‘Game of Thrones’, she has played several roles in films and series including ‘Quantum of Solace’, ‘The Devil’s Double’, ‘Black Mirror’, and most recently ‘Treason’, etc.
It has also been revealed that after ‘Avatar 3, the next sequel ‘Avatar 4’ will feature a big time jump. Further, ‘Avatar 5’ will be the first ‘Avatar’ film in which some parts will also take place on Earth, which will be shown as an overpopulated, under-resourced, and hard-to-live planet. The Avatar sequels ‘Avatar 3’, ‘Avatar 4’, and ‘Avatar 5’ are slated to release in theatres in the years 2024, 2026, and 2028, respectively.
