Netflix’s latest biopic drama ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ has released its first look and every featured actor looks iconic. The film is based on the play of the same name written by August Wilson. The story focuses on one fateful recording session of Ma Rainey and her band in 1927 Chicago.
Viola Davis is set to play the titular character ‘Ma Rainey’ and she looks the part of the iconic blues singer. The rest of the solo pictures include one of Chadwick Boseman, Taylour Paige and Colman Domingo each. The men look dashing in their vintage suits while the women look beautiful in their 1920s “party/performance” dresses. Boseman will portray trumpeter Levee, while Paige will portray Dussie Mae and Domingo will portray Cutler.
The film follows “The Queen of the Blues” Ma Rainey during an afternoon recording session in a 1927 Chicago recording studio. Tensions and temperatures rise as “The Queen of the Blue” rushes in late for the session. Ma is in a fiery mood, having had a battle of wits with her white manager and producer, regarding the direction her music should be going. The band waits in a claustrophobia-inducing room while it’s ambitious trumpeter Levee tries to stake his own claim in the band, and also trying to steal Ma Rainey’s girlfriend from under her at the same time.
The film is directed by George C. Wolfe, written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and produced by Todd Black, Denzel Washington and Dany Wolf. The film stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, which will be his final performance prior to his death, in a feature film.
Netflix is releasing ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ on it’s streaming platform on December 18th 2020.
