Netflix’s new drama series ‘The Queen’s Gambit‘ has received tremendous love and adoration from fans of good drama across the globe. The compelling drama has caught the fancy of critics, audiences and a multitude of celebrities. Even Stephen King, the master of thrill and suspense, took to his Twitter to praise The Queen’s Gambit and its intriguing premise. To quote him, he described it as “utterly thrilling”. However, there is an unexpected result of The Queen’s Gambit becoming Netflix’s latest hit. And it is — a huge worldwide increase in interest in Chess, which is quite apparent from the massive rise in the downloads of chess apps!
As per a detailed analysis by apps monitoring agency Apptopia, ever since The Queen’s Gambit debuted on Netflix and became a hit, mobile chess games apps have seen a massive rise in daily downloads. The rise is 11% worldwide, and a stunning 63% in the United States. The analysis, by Adam Blacker, VP Insights at Apptopia, states that the “percentage change looks at the average daily downloads of 10 days prior to debut compared with that of debut day plus 9 days after.” That’s a huge rise in interest in Chess, which has traditionally been considered a game for brainy nerds.
The last obviously seems a thing of the past, at least as of now. For, if the aforementioned report is to be believed, Chess is officially the new cool. And all due to a streaming show! Mobile apps for Chess are quite useful for those new to the game. The diverse apps available online allow users to do both – play and learn the game. Users can play live games against other users, or with artificial intelligence-powered opponents. The apps also teach newbies the intricacies of the game, along with the various openings, moves and maneuvers of chess greats.
