It’s been two months since the grand theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller movie ‘Oppenheimer’ but there was still no word on the film’s digital / OTT release date. Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’, which was released on the same day, is now streaming on Indian OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video and BMS Stream on a rental basis.
In an exciting piece of update, the film’s producer Emma Thomas has revealed (via the Associated Press) that ‘Oppenheimer’ would not be available to be purchased on digital or for streaming at home until late November. This means that we would have to wait for another two months to watch the star-studded blockbuster from the comfort of our homes.
Although such a long theatrical-digital release gap is almost unheard of these days, the decision makes sense from the makers’ perspective because ‘Oppenheimer’ is still attracting moviegoers to theatres especially during the weekends. And a film like ‘Oppenheimer’ was always intended to be a big-screen experience.
However, it is to be noted that even if a popular Hollywood film releases digitally, it’s not a given that the movie will concurrently be made available for streaming on an Indian OTT platform for regular streaming. But once the film is out on digital, it can be expected that its Indian OTT premiere should soon follow, even though initially on a rental / pay-per-view basis. And ‘Oppenheimer’ is no exception. After its expected digital release in November end, the film should probably start streaming on an Indian OTT platform soon after.
Until now, ‘Oppenheimer’ starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer has grossed over an impressive $910 million at the box office globally. The movie has received rave reviews and currently holds a 93% critics’ score on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes. Stay tuned to Binged for ‘Oppenheimer’ digital and OTT release date in India.
