Cillian Murphy’s New Role In Zombie Film ’28 Years Later’ At Sony

After years of gestation, it’s happening finally. ’28 Years Later’, the third film in the successful ’28 Days Later’ zombie franchise, is finally moving ahead, this time at Sony Pictures. What’s more, Cillian Murphy, star of the original ’28 Days Later’ movie, will return to the franchise, albeit in a new role. Oppenhiemer star Cillian Murphy is on board ’28 Years Later’ as executive producer of the film.

There’s no word yet on whether Cillian Murphy will also act in 28 Years Later or not. The first film in the franchise, ’28 Days Later’, holds a special place in the actor’s life since it marked his breakout role in the film industry.

Interestingly, Cillian Murphy was not connected in any capacity to ’28 Weeks Later’, a direct sequel of ’28 Days Later’, and the second film in the franchise. He was neither part of the cast nor of the crew of ’28 Weeks Later’. Even Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, director and writer of the original, were on board 28 Weeks Later only as executive producers.

The much-talked-about sequel ’28 Years Later’ will have both Danny Boyle and Alex Garland returning as director and writer, along with Cillian Murphy as executive producer. Of course, if Cillian Murphy agrees to star in the film as well, it’ll be the proverbial cherry on the cake.

For the unversed, zombie horror film ’28 Days Later’ released in 2002 and became a sleeper hit worldwide. It also triggered the new wave of zombie movies, including The Walking Dead, among others. A sequel ’28 Weeks Later’ was released in 2007, which was quite successful but not as much as the first film.

The third film in the franchise has long been talked about by original creators Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. They planned to name it ’28 Months Later’ earlier. But now that it’s been more than 20 years to the first film, the title ’28 Years Later’ seems more apt.
