Streaming giant Netflix has bagged a new film in its kitty, from All Quiet On The Western Front director, Edward Berger. Titled ‘The Ballad Of A Small Player’, the new Netflix film will star British actor Colin Farrell in the lead role.
‘The Ballad Of A Small Player’ is set in the world of Macau’s gambling casinos. The story follows a high-stakes gambler cum conman, who decides to lay low in Macau after his past and debts catch up with him. Along the way he encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation. Colin Farrell will essay the role of the gambler. There’s no information yet on the rest of the lead cast.
The film is written by Rowan Joffe, based on British author Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel of the same name. The original book is a psychological thriller, with supernatural elements thrown into the mix. The Ballad Of A Small Player will be produced by Mike Goodridge’s Good Chaos banner, along with Edward Berger’s Nine Hours banner. Matthew James Wilkinson is the co-producer of the film.
Edward Berger’s previous film for Netflix, the German ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ proved to be an unequivocal success for the streamer. Not only did the film win four Academy Awards at the Oscars 2023, a clutch of BAFTAs as well as numerous other awards, but it also landed on Netflix’s all-time most watched films in the non-English category.
