The Coronavirus Second wave is ringing danger bells for the Telugu film industry. Tollywood is the only industry to reach the pre-COVID levels with multiple releases lined up for Summer. While small films ruled the roost until now, the summer is reserved for the biggies.
But then, things have changed drastically in the last few days. The second wave is here and India is recording close to One Lakh cases every day. The North markets are closed. Much to the disappointment of the Telugu filmmakers, Karnataka had already announced curtailing the occupancy in the theaters to 50%.
Karnataka is one of the biggest markets for Telugu Cinema. This is a big loss after the loss in the US market which is only operating around 30% of its normal occupancy. If things turn bad, the 50% clause will be back in Telugu states as well. In such a case, the OTT platforms are gearing up to fish in troubled waters. The star films resisted the temptation of OTT releases in the first wave. They can not know the OTT platforms feel as all these projects are delayed very much. They see this as a big opportunity to expand in Telugu markets. Let us see what is in store!
