Could Kurup Have Beaten Lucifer’s Box Office Numbers Pre-Covid?

By Binged Bureau - Nov 29, 2021 @ 06:11 pm

Malayalam blockbuster, ‘Kurup‘ crossed Rs. 75 crores in earnings a few days ago, and we feel confident that the crime thriller should safely become the third Malayalam movie to earn over Rs. 100 crores worldwide, in the coming days. The reception for this film has been astonishing, especially since this Malayalam film was released in theatres only 17 days ago and its main market, Kerala, has only allowed theatres to be opened at 50 percent capacity. If this is how the film is being received currently, after the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic; then how would this Dulquer Salmaan starrer have fared in a non-Covid climate? Could it have beaten ‘Lucifer’s’ box office numbers, which is the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time?

While we do not know if the film could have beaten ‘Lucifer’, there is a good chance that ‘Kurup’ could have taken the second spot on the highest-grossing Malayalam movies list – beating another Mohanlal starrer, ‘Pulimurugan’. Especially if the film manages to get Rs. 100 crores (which is looking more and more possible as the days go by). However, with ‘Lucifer’ being the first Malayalam film to enter into the 200 crore club, ‘Kurup’ would have found it hard to attract the level of audiences the Mohanlal feature film could bring in – and eventually lose out.

Still, what ‘Kurup’ has managed to achieve is nothing less than extraordinary. This Malayalam crime thriller is the third highest-grossing Mollywood film of all time, and to do that around the globe after the world was hit by the coronavirus is amazing. And who knows, if this film crosses Rs. 140-150 crores in box office collections, then there is a real chance that this movie could have actually beaten ‘Lucifer’ during a non-pandemic time.
