Could Netflix’s Minnal Murali Get A Theatrical Release?!

Netflix finally announced the release date of Mollywood’s first-ever superhero film, ‘Minnal Murali’, and it is releasing during the last week of December. The Tovino Thomas starrer got a short promo video released from Netflix India’s official YouTube account, which announced the official release date. However, unlike the expected October or even November release, the film producers and the OTT platform have decided to drop the film on Christmas eve. Since the film is expected to be released on the streaming platform in exactly three months, is there a chance that this 90-day delay might actually be a stall so that Minnal Murali may get a theatrical release if possible?

Not that we are complaining, but if the production house behind Minnal Murali wanted to release the film in theatres first, then the Christmas Eve OTT release date is actually quite genius. This is because, according to the latest reports – the state government of Kerala will open talks with distribution associations, cinema hall associations and theatre associations such as FEOUK to allow theatres to open in the Southern State, starting next month. If the talks go well, it is likely possible that the theatres will open by mid-October or even early November. This will allow Minnal Murali to run in theatres for a month at least and hopefully recuperate some of the losses they have incurred over the last 18 months.

We do not know the terms of the contract agreement between the Minnal Murali filmmakers and Netflix, however, so this is just speculation for now. While Netflix has released movies in theatres first before dropping them on their streaming platform after a month or so, we do not know if that will happen with Minnal Murali. We will only know for sure after theatres open in Kerala. So for now, we will have to wait and see.

Minnal Murali is expected to premiere on Netflix on December 24th 2021. Check out the aforementioned release date promo below:
