All diehard movie buffs must already be aware of the entertainment website Letterboxd, an Auckland-based movies-centric social platform for passionate cinephiles. The platform is well known for its various movies-centric international lists such as year-wise ‘Top 50 Movies’ lists and ‘One Million’ & ‘Two Million’ watched lists, etc.
And in a fantastic piece of news for Indian cinephiles, another Indian film has cracked the coveted Letterboxd top 50 international movies list for 2024. And the film is the Malayalam language romantic comedy ‘Premalu’, which was released in theatres last week. The film is currently placed on Rank 18, and it has also received good reviews from many critics.
Some time back, we had made our readers aware that the two Indian movies namely the Sundance 2024 Audience Award winner ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ (Rank 14) and Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Merry Christmas’ (Rank 23) were included in the Letterboxd top 50 list (2024). And they are still there.
Since it’s the start of the year 2024, there are just 23 films from across the globe which have been included in the said Letterboxd list. The Letterbox top 50 global list has been topped by another Sundance winner – the comedy drama ‘Didi’ (Rank 1), followed by the comedy film ‘Thelma’ (Rank 2), Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ (Rank 3), and Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘A Real Pain’ (Rank 4), amongst others.
Coming back to ‘Premalu’, the basic plot of the movie revolves around an aimless engineering graduate Sachin (played by Naslen), who falls in love with an IT professional Reenu (played by Mamitha Baiju). But the problem is that Reenu wants a partner who is mature and well-settled, that is, almost exactly opposite of what Sachin is.
