Cruel Intentions Reaches The House Of Prime Video

It’s been almost 24 years since the original film, and rumors about a TV series based on it have finally materialized. Amazon Prime Video has ordered an eight-episode series, offering a modern take on “Cruel Intentions,” adapted from the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Set at a prestigious D.C. university, the project, initially developed for Freevee, will now air on Prime Video.

Writers and executive producers Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher are at the helm of the series, previously known as IMDb TV. Prime Video’s move coincides with its plans to introduce ads next year.

Expressing excitement about bringing the next chapter of “Cruel Intentions” to Prime Video, Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals at Amazon MGM Studios, acknowledges the timeless allure of the story. She appreciates the commitment of the cast, writers Phoebe and Sara, and partners Sony and Original Film.

The series promises to continue the intriguing interplay of deception, wit, and reckoning that has captivated audiences since the ’90s film and 18th-century novel.

Continuing the legacy of 1999, the series will also feature fewer and older faces. The cast includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas, reprising a different role from the 1999 film. Recurring roles include Claire Forlani, Nikki Crawford, Isabella Tagliati, Zeke Goodman, and Jon Tenney.

The Prime Video series marks the third attempt to adapt “Cruel Intentions” for TV. Fox initially ordered a spinoff called Manchester Prep, which was scrapped. NBC pursued a sequel in 2015, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role, but the network passed on it. Gellar later expressed relief, stating the story was more suited for streaming than network television.

No specific release window has been announced, but for shooting and production, we can expect a late 2025 release. Stay updated with such news by tuning into Binged.
