Netizens have been slamming Netflix for ‘sexualising young girls’ in its upcoming French film ‘Cuties’. The rage is so that an online petition against the film on Change.org has received more than 20,000 signatures in the just 24 hours.
The coming-of-age drama ‘Cuties’ centres around Amy, an 11-year-old girl who belongs to a traditional Senegalese Muslim family. She is caught between her traditional values and her desire to be more acceptable to her internet savvy peers for whom being sexy is the key to becoming popular.
People are demanding from Netflix to remove the film, set to release on 9th September on the platform, saying that it’s not ‘suitable for children’. Moreover, twitteratis has been strongly voicing their opinion against the ‘Cuties’ and its poster showing four young girls in inappropriate dance poses and dresses. Even the Google rating for the film is just one star along with harsh reviews, at the moment of writing this story.
In a response to the public outrage, Netflix even updated the official synopsis.
Before –
‘Amy, 11, becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family’s traditions.’
After –
‘Eleven-year-old Amy starts to revel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.’
But this hasn’t helped Netflix, as the demand for pulling the film down still continues.
‘Cuties’ (‘Mignonnes’ in French) marks the directorial debut of Maïmouna Doucouré who has also written it. The film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and also won directing jury award. The film is supposed to premiere on Netflix on 9th September, 2020.
