When half of the Bengali film industry has come down to the streets to protest against there are some who are thinking beyond that and are already making a movie out of the R.G Kar incident. And they are not brave enough to make it with documentary-like devotion to facts, but even give a spice of romance to the story and make it a semi-fictional account.
This attempt looks absolutely ridiculous in the face of the protests and does not seem to be anything more than a cash grab opportunity. The movie is titled ‘Daanab’ and it will star Rupsa Mukhopadhyay and Piyar Khan in leading roles. Veteran actors like Kharaj Mukhopadhyay, Laban Sarkar, Anindya Bandyopadhyay, Koushik Bandyopadhyay will be in important roles. The direction is being handled by Atul Islam.
The movie tells the story of a morgue worker named Shiba who is in love with a nurse in the same hospital. One day a body comes to the morgue and Shiba is shocked to find that it is his girlfriend. She has been terribly raped and tortured by multiple people, but Shiba himself is arrested for the incident. The movie is definitely made in the shadow of the R. G. Kar incident but is not sincere enough to make it actually a sensitive, empathetic and true-to-facts narrative. They take few elements from here and few from there and make up one more romantic tragedy without any artistic integrity.
The shooting has not started yet and probably the movie will still sell a lot because of its relevance.
