Books adaptations are definitely one of the most “in” things now. It’s not like it wasn’t there earlier, but now with streaming services all around, more and more books are being turned into cinematic wonders. Just like that, Netflix has now begun its work on one more book adaptation and have already found its leading lady.
Dakota Johnson is all set to star in Netflix as the leading lady for its adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel “Persuasion”. The upcoming project is being directed by Carrie Cracknell. She is known for directing Jake Gyllenhaal in “Sea Wall/ A Life” on Broadway. The project will mark her feature directorial debut. Ron Bass and Alice Victoria have adapted the screenplay for the film.
Persuasion is Jane Austen’s last novel and was released after her death in 1817. Just like all her other stories, Austen here too told a witty story of an independent and free spirited girl. The story follows the life of Anne Eliott, who is still unmarried at the age of 27 and her dysfunctional family is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Anne once again reconnects with the man that she was once engaged to and falls in love to give this a second time. This time she won’t be persuaded by her family and friends like the last time. Jane Austen who has released remarkable literary pieces her entire life tells stories mixed with humor and irony, which were out of the box and strong for women at that age and period. Persuasion too is one such story, her other stories include Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility.
Staying true to the concept, the makers will take a modern and witty take on the story and retell it to the world. This is not the first time Persuasion has been brought to the screen, earlier in 2007 a TV movie came out that starred Sally Hawkins.
While Persuasion is being developed at Netflix with Dakota Johnson in lead, there is also under Persuasion adaptation underway. Actor Sarah Snook leads that movie and is being produced at Searchlight Pictures. That particular movie was announced back in September 2020.
The production of Netflix’s Persuasion is set to begin in May. The project which is being produced by Netflix is also being backed by MRC Films that is known to have produced movies like “Knives Out” and “The Lovebirds”.
