Indian documentaries have a strange problem. This becomes even more prominent as the subjects become more high profile. The last time we saw it was on Netflix India’s The Romantics. It was a series based on one of the greatest filmmakers in Hindi cinema without any use of Hindi.
Prime Video takes it to the next level. They have come up with Dancing On The Grave. It is based on the murder of the granddaughter of the late Diwan of Mysore. The family was one of the richest and most influential families in the whole of Karnataka. Still, the documentary is nowhere to be seen in the original Kannada language.
The original language of the series is English. We realize that some people can be more comfortable in English than in any other language, but at least Prime Video should have dubbed the series.
But surprisingly, there is nothing as such. The four part series is available in English. Also, it has been dubbed only in Hindi. Sadly, the local people of Karnataka who are not comfortable in Hindi or English will have nothing to watch.
This is indeed a sad event and one more example of how platforms ignore languages that ultimately piss off audiences.
