Danny Boyle’s Zombie Film ‘28 Days Later’ Sequel In The Works

The immensely popular and highly rated post-apocalyptic horror movie ‘28 Days Later’ is often named as one of the films which helped revive the zombie genre in the post-2k era followed by Zack Snyder’s underrated film ‘Dawn of the Dead’. ‘28 Days Later’, which featured ‘Oppenheimer’ actor Cillian Murphy, was directed by Danny Boyle, who became a household name when his India-set film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ bagged multiple Oscars.

A sequel titled ‘28 Weeks Later’ came out a few years after the first film. Although it was not directed by Danny Boyle himself, the film achieved critical and commercial success. Since then, there have been talks about another sequel to ’28 Days Later’ and it looks like the wait is finally over.

Because, as per the latest update, a sequel to the 2002 film ‘28 Days Later’ titled ’28 Years Later’ is now in the works. And interestingly, Danny Boyle is joining hands with the first film’s writer Alex Garland (who later directed sci-fi flicks ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Annihilation’) for the upcoming sequel. So, considering the terrific team, ‘28 Years Later’ is going to be a hot property for major studios and streamers in the coming days.

The sequel ‘28 Years Later’ might be converted into a new trilogy of films if things go well. Danny Boyle will be back in the director’s chair for the first film and Alex Garland will lend his writing skills to all three. The estimated budget for each of these films is expected to be around $75 million, unlike the first film, which was made on a modest budget.

For those who haven’t watched the first film ‘28 Days Later’, the film’s plot follows a London-based bicycle courier (Cillian Murphy), who awakens from a coma only to find out that a mysterious virus has destroyed the world, which is now overrun by aggressive zombies. Now, he must team up with a group of survivors with the hope of finding a safe place to hide. The movie holds 87% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sadly, it’s not streaming anywhere on Indian OTT as of now. Stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on ‘28 Days Later’ sequel ‘28 Years Later’.
