One of the most sought after filmmakers in the world, David Fincher dropped a huge bomb of an announcement during his interview with the French Magazine, Premiere. Finch said that he has signed an exclusive new multi-million dollar deal with the streaming service Netflix which will span for four years. Fincher said that he is excited to try out something new in his 40-year spanning career.
Fincher has worked with Netflix before, being an executive producer for the popular web series ‘House of Cards’, ‘Mindhunter’ and ‘Love, Death & Robots’. He directed the first two episodes of the first mentioned political drama (show), developed the animated anthology ‘Love, Death & Robots’ with Tim Miller and developed & directed the serial killer drama ‘Mindhunter’. His latest feature, which will be a black-and-white movie based on the true Hollywood tale, ‘Mank’, has been produced by Netflix as well. The movie will first release theatrically on November 13th (in select theaters), and will then premiere worldwide on Netflix next month, on December 4th.
Netflix has been slowly giving deals to acclaimed story tellers, film makers and producers such as Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, and the Game of Thrones creative duo David Benioff and Dan Weiss. Fincher will be given a massive budget for the four years with complete creative control, so it is obvious why Fincher is excited. The acclaimed filmmaker says that the jump in platforms will allow him to feel like how Picasso felt, trying new things even while being in this creative field for a long time.
This is exciting news for all David Fincher fans and for movie fans in general, as this could mean Fincher would be releasing more content in the upcoming four years. Fincher has been notoriously well known to take huge gaps while creating his films, which can be seen in his filmography of only 11 films (not counting the brilliant web-series under his belt). We know the film maker has many stories penned beforehand, so we hope that the budget provided to him by Netflix should help him along in creating his masterpieces.
