DC Universe Kicks Off In Style, James Gunn Announces New Projects

By Binged Bureau - Feb 01, 2023 @ 08:02 am

DCU is coming! The much-awaited reboot of the DC Universe will officially kick off in 2025. The co-chiefs of Warner Bros Discovery, James Gunn and Peter Safran, met with the press on Monday and unveiled the projects that will establish DCU as a rebooted and shared superhero franchise. Furthermore, Gunn also made this announcement on social media, revealing the first ten projects of the rebooted DCU.

Gunn revealed that his focus was to interconnect all the new DCU entries with one another in films, television, gaming, and animation. He also talked about keeping the characters consistent, played by the same actors. As for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Todd Phillips’ Joker, and Teen Titans Go, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer informed that these projects would be a part of ‘DC Elseworlds’. Hence, they will not be a part of the mainstream DCU continuity.

The above-mentioned scenario doesn’t mean we should completely ignore upcoming projects like Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2. These four movies will hit the theatres this year. But the most important among them is undoubtedly Ezra Miller’s The Flash. The forthcoming Andy Muschietti directional will serve as a tool to reboot the entire DC Universe.

The duo of Gunn and Safran have mapped out an 8-10 year plan to establish DCU properly. This plan is a part of the franchise’s first chapter: Gods and Monsters. First, let’s have a look at the upcoming shows!

Television Shows

Creature Commandos (Animated TV Series)

It is the only animated series of the newly announced slate. Gunn himself has written all the episodes. The show will focus on Rick Flagg Sr (who will also appear in a live-action project), Eric Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Weasel, G. I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, and Nina Mazursky.

Waller

It will be a spin-off series based on the character of Amanda Waller, still played by Viola Davis. The director of the infamous Suicide Squad will team up with Team Peacemaker in this series. Watchmen fame Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver will lead this project.

Lanterns

We have fan-favourite Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as protagonists in this one. Although, it is unclear whether this show is the Greg Berlanti one or something else.

Paradise Lost

This will serve as a GOT-styled Wonder Woman prequel series, set before the birth of Diana Prince. The show will concentrate on the politics played among the women of Themyscira and the things they do to attain power at any cost.

Booster Gold

This project focuses on a superhero with imposter syndrome. He arrives from the future to make a name for himself in the present.

Movies

Superman: Legacy

Gunn is currently working on its script and may even helm it in future. We will see Superman struggling to balance his ordinary human life with his superhero one here.

The Authority

The Authority is a team of antiheroes who think the world is broken. And they don’t shy from going to extreme lengths to fix it.

The Brave and the Bold

This film will have a Batman and Robin storyline. A new actor will don The Dark Knight’s cape in this one. It means that Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck are out of the frame. Bruce Wayne will take Damian under his wing as the new Robin and train him. We may even see other members of the Bat Family in this movie.

Swamp Thing

Based on the dark origin story of Swamp Thing.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Gunn has given Superman’s cousin her first movie. We are familiar with Clark Kent’s kindness, thanks to his adoptive parents for raising him right. On the other hand, Supergirl did not land on Earth after Krypton’s destruction. Instead, she survived on a piece of her home planet that drifted off. This film will explore the pain ‘The Girl of Steel’ endured after watching her loved ones die in front of her.

Gunn did not mention anything about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 in his latest announcement. Will we see the actress appearing in future DCU projects? Only time will tell us.

Safran and Gunn also revealed their plan to drop two movies and two shows per year as part of the rebooted DCU. It makes sense as this case will protect the quality of the projects. Also, it will be interesting to see how DCU performs in the coming years. Stay tuned for more updates.
